2.4L L4 (LD9) Features & Benefits

OVERVIEW
The LD9 Twin Cam delivers power and more sophisticated technology to entry-level buyers seeking a sporty performance kick. Small improvements for model year 2001 add up to an overall increase in quality, reliability and durability.

NEW OR CHANGED FOR 2001 MODEL YEAR
* More Efficient Catalytic Converters
* New Starter Motor
* Sleeveless Coolant Sensor
* New Cruise Control Module

CUSTOMER BENEFITS

BETTER CATS
The catalytic converter has the same volume as that used for model year 2000. Yet improved technology allows the converter to work as efficiently with less precious metals in the substrate, or the core of the converter brick where the catalytic reaction begins. The new converter reduces cost considerably and still allows the LD9 to meets National Low Emission Vehicle (NLEV) standards.

STARTER
The new starter motor, supplied by Delco Remy America, draws less amperage than the starter used for model year 2000, yet delivers the same cold cranking power. That means the same starting power with less drain on the battery. The starter is also lighter and costs less to manufacture.

SLEEVELESS COOLANT SENSOR
The coolant temperature sensor uses a plastic insulator to protect electrical leads inside the brass housing, rather than a rubber sleeve. The new sensor reduces the possibility of assembly rejection or shorting in operation.

IMPROVED CRUISE CONTROL
The cruise control module has been upgraded with the latest electronic board. The driver will notice no difference in operation, but quality, reliability and durability are improved, and piece cost is reduced.

CONTINUING FEATURES
The LD9 received a number of improvements for model year 2000. Revisions to the composite plastic intake manifold improved airflow and evaporative air-fuel mixing to improve efficiency and reduce emissions. The throttle body was fitted with gold-plated terminals for its electrical connections to further improve reliability and durability.

The LD9 flywheel was revised and lightened to accommodate new Getrag five-speed manual transaxle. For model year 1999, the latest Multec II fuel injectors were introduced, ensuring the most precise fuel delivery possible with a smaller, more clog-resistant injector design. The 2.4 Twin Cam began production as the Quad Four-- Powertrain's first all-American dual-overhead cam line four. It underwent extensive revision in 1996, when displacement increased from 2.3 to 2.4 liters. The cam was re-profiled, and the intake and exhaust systems were reworked to decrease engine noise. A stroke increase, new balance shafts and hydraulic engine mounts radically improved overall noise, vibration and harshness control, yet the Twin Cam kept the edgy, high-rev power delivery sporting that customers appreciate.

"There's an option price for the LD9 compared to the base line four, but it's more sophisticated, and it's a good deal for the power it delivers. Performance is basically equivalent to some V6s. With steady improvements, we're balancing long-term corporate goals and keeping the customer satisfied."
--Marv Thomson, Total Integration Engineer, LN2/LD9.

LEADERSHIP
The LD9 delivers high specific output and twin-cam, four-valve technology at price that's affordable to entry-level sport-minded buyers.

"With the LD9 and standard five-speed manual], a Grand Am can go head to head with sporty compact-class imports and often come out ahead. The 2.4-liter dohc 4-cylinder engine's 150-bhp rating is the highest in its class." --ROAD & TRACK 2000 BUYERS GUIDE
