I've come to realize that everything electronic runs on smoke, you let too much of it out and the electronics stop working!

What's the numbers on the small 16 pin chip on the right next to the 2nd dial from the left in the first pic? Looks like a 16 pin SOIC. If mao just get a 16pin clip for it.

Pretty tight for a clip to fit in?, go the old school way and desolder, or Solder wires to it?, Still no guarantee that there would be enough power to read the chip, a quick Google says it used in instruments that need a bit of power due to leds ect.

It's used to drive the led's on the cluster board, not able to be "read".

Bahaha, well that could be an issue :D (no experience with pic devices).

Where the hell is it getting the data from!, chuck up all the components numbers and see what is what.

That board is the same as the 2 that I have. Im guessing the cluster is using the internal Micro Memory to store its data.

There are 3 x tpic6b595 and 1 x pcf8576ct (on the bottom left) and a 780826gc-016 (big square one in the middle)

As far as the led driver one goes, google was my friend there (i didn't know off the top of my head) :)

Looks like delcohacking were looking into these (vt to vx) just last year.

"pinouts, looking at the back of the cluster pin 1 being top left, pin 20 being bottom right.

Pin 6 is Ground
Pin 12 is Serial Data
Pin 19 is Power +12v IGN
Pin 20 is Power +12v

When i power the cluster up on the bench it beeps and displays the X for fault codes logged. So i sent F2,56,0A,AE to see if it would do anything and the fault indicator X went off and cluster flashed like it reset so is happy with that!" Thanks The1

Should try and hook up to it and attempt some codes possibly?

They seemed a bit stumped on where the data was being stored, as the MCU has no internal flash. (according to the delco boys)

don't get why there is two types of VT and VX clusters!, should have stuck to the eeproms!
