ABS Diagnostic Information for the Ford ED Falcon

  • Bendix LC5 Pump Back ABS
This document describes the ABS Error codes for the Bendix LC5 Pump Back ABS model, which was fitted to Ford EBII and ED Models, Ford Falcon, Fairmont, Fairlane, LTD, and XR series vehicles.

This information includes how to place the ABS into diagnostic mode, and how to read the codes without using a specialised Diagnostic connector.
  • The Bendix ABS LC5 "Pump Back" system, has a self test facility, and will hold intermittent faults within its memory, for a period of 50 Key Starts.
Fault codes are classified as being either on demand, i.e. present at the time of the self test, or stored, i.e. occurred previously and have since been repaired and intermittent faults.

Upon Detecting a fault, the ECU will shut the ABS system down, the Check ABS light will illuminate, and the Fault will be logged.
After one ignition cycle and if the fault has been rectified, the ABS system will again be operational, and will log the fault as a stored code.

Once the system has shut down, it will not recover until the ignition has been cycled.
Up to 3 codes can be logged simultaneously, and can be viewed sequentially.
For this reason, it is important that the system is retested once a problem has been rectified, to ensure that no further fault codes exist.
  • The Diagnostic connector is located behind the fuse box panel cover (underneath the Instrument panel, on the right of the steering column).
The ABS module can be entered into diagnostic mode by grounding the ABS STI (Self Test Input) pin, on the Vehicles Diagnostic connector.
This can be achieved by connecting the ABS GND pin (3rd pin from left, second row), to the ABS STI pin (3rd pin from left, upper row).

Once the ABS Module has been placed in to Diagnostic mode, the Check ABS Light on the Instrument Panel will flash, giving the ABS Trouble code.

  • The ABS ECU Self test codes are held in the EEPROM, and can only be cleared by performing a self test procedure, interrupting the self test during code display.
(i.e. removing the Ground link to the ABS STI pin), and waiting 3-5 seconds, before switching the ignition off.

    Code Name Description Action Required
12 No ABS Fault codes Stored System OK (as far as self test can determine)
10 Separator Code This code is displayed between Fault Codes
11 The ABS System is OK There are no registered faults with the ABS Module
17 Hydraulic Solenoid The Solenoid is continuously powered up Check the Relay and wiring for possible shorts to Battery +12V
18 ABS ECM Fault The ABS Module may not be getting power, or ground Check to see if the ECM is getting +12V, and that the battery ground strap is connected
29 Hydraulic Actuator The Hydraulic Actuator Appears to be not connected Check the wiring loom for any loose connections, or damage to the wiring
31 ABS Warning Lamp The Check ABS Warning Lamp appears to not be functioning correctly Check the globe to see if it is blown, if the bulb holder is sitting correctly, and that the ABS Fuse is not blown
32 Hydraulic Solenoid Voltage Monitor The Voltage is low, or the circuit is open or shorted Check the Electrical connections for good contact, Check the Battery Voltage at the Solenoid
33 Warning Lamp Diode There is a problem with the warning Lamp diode, located on the Back of the Cluster wiring loom Check to see if the Diode is fitted, and the wiring has not been damaged
34 Excessive Speed Sensor Signal Decay The sensor signal is wrong for the current vehicle conditions. The fault could be in the sensor, the wiring, or the ECU. The tone wheel may be missing, or the wrong type fitted. The Sensor may have fallen out. Check the Brake Lines, Test Speed sensor, and wiring loom for speed sensor. (Vehicle may have been braked on ice or snow, or driver performed a line lock burnout
35 ABS Pump Motor The Pump Motor appears to be not working, or is permanently on Check the Pump Relay for a short, open circuit, voltage at the pump, and wiring connectors
36 Brake Decay Extended The Speed Sender count does not match the wheel speed The Park brake may have been on while the vehicle driven, the ABS tone wheel may be damaged, the Brake is not able to decay pressure
43 Right Rear wheel speed sensor fault (Drivers Side) The sensor signal is wrong for the current vehicle conditions. The fault could be in the sensor, the wiring, or the ECU. The tone wheel may be missing, or the wrong type fitted. The Sensor may have fallen out. Test Speed sensor, the ABS Tone Wheel, and wiring loom for speed sensor. Also clean sensor and tone wheel
44 Left Rear wheel speed sensor fault (Passenger Side) The sensor signal is wrong for the current vehicle conditions.
45 Right Front wheel speed sensor fault (Drivers Side) The sensor signal is wrong for the current vehicle conditions.
46 Left Front wheel speed sensor fault (Passenger Side) The sensor signal is wrong for the current vehicle conditions.
47 Average wheel speed sensor fault (Drivers Side) One wheel has wheel spin for 3 to 8 seconds after key ON, Two wheels have wheel spin for more than 20 seconds after key ON Test Speed sensor, the ABS Tone Wheel, and wiring loom for speed sensor. Also clean sensor and tone wheel
71 Right Rear Wheel Speed Sensor There is a continuity fault with the wiring for the Wheel sensor - (No Signal) Check the wiring harness for the wheel sensor is connected, and not shorted or open circuit
72 Left Rear Wheel Speed Sensor There is a continuity fault with the wiring for the Wheel sensor - (No Signal) Check the wiring harness for the wheel sensor is connected, and not shorted or open circuit
73 Right Front Wheel Speed Sensor There is a continuity fault with the wiring for the Wheel sensor - (No Signal) Check the wiring harness for the wheel sensor is connected, and not shorted or open circuit
74 Left Front Wheel Speed Sensor There is a continuity fault with the wiring for the Wheel sensor - (No Signal) Check the wiring harness for the wheel sensor is connected, and not shorted or open circuit
90 ABS Model ID This code does not indicate an ABS Fault
