Adding steering wheel audio controls to an EF/EL Falcon for the Ford EF II Falcon

Introduction


  • Many mordern audio systems come with steering wheel audio button functionality.
    Basically, this function consists of two wires that are connected to the the audio buttons on factory audio systems.
    The aftermarket deck simply monitors the resistance between these two lines, and when that resistance changes, then the audio system determines what audio button has been depressed.
    Different Resistance values represent different buttons depressed.

    AU model falcons came with steering wheel mounted audio controls.
    These buttons fit to EF and EL Model steering wheels, and would be ideal for use with aftermarket decks.
    This document describes what is required to fit, and wire these buttons to be used on an EF/EL Falcons, with an aftermarket Deck.

Tools and Parts Required


  • Tools Required
    Phillips head screwdriver
    Flatheaded screwdriver
    T45 Torx bit
    10mm Socket
    Parts required
    Steering wheel audio switches and connector from an AU Falcon
    Cruise Control Stalk Switch and assembly from an AU Falcon (If cruise control is fitted).

Step 1 - Airbag and steering wheel removal


  • Before you begin
    Ensure that your steering wheel is pointed straight ahead. This ensures that the clockspring will be aligned properly when removing and fitting.

    Step 1 - Airbag and steering wheel removal
  • 1) Remove the two plastic blanking plugs located on the two sides of the steering wheel plastic cover.
    >
  • 2) Using a 10mm Socket, remove the two 10mm bolts located under the plastic blanking plugs
  • 3) Gently pull the Airbag from the steering wheel assembly.
  • 4) Disconnect the Airbag from the steering wheel / clockspring connector.
  • 5) Disonnect the cruise control / horn button connectors from the clockspring connector.
  • 6) Using a T45 Torx bit or T45 Torx Key, Loosen the steering wheel mounting bolt.
  • 7) Loosen the Bolt so as it is only held in place by two or three turns.
  • 8) Ensuring the above bolt is in place, forcibly loosen the steering wheel.
    (Note the bolt should be in place to prevent the steering wheel from flying off and smacking you in the face,
    due to the amount of force that is required to remove the wheel).
  • 9) Once the steering wheel is loose, remove the bolt, and the steering wheel.

Step 2 - Clockspring and steering wheel stalk removal.


  • The clockspring mechanism should now be clearly visable,
  • 1) Located the 2 Screws holding the lower steering column plastic shroud in place, and remove.
  • 2) With the lower steering column shroud removed, located the 4 screws holding the holder the upper steering column plastic shroud in place.
  • 3) Remove the 4 screws, and the upper steering wheel shroud.
  • 4) Disconnect the electrical connectors at the bottom of the steering wheel column, for the clockspring and the steering wheel stalk switches.
  • 5) Locate the 3 Screws holding the clockspring and steering wheel stalk switch assembly in place.
  • 6) remove the 3 screws, and the clockspring / steering wheel stalk switches.

Step 3 - Preparing the clock springs


  • The next step is removing the clock spring assembly from the Au Stalk switches, as well as removing the clock spring assembly from the EF Stalk switches.
  • 1) There are three clips that hold the clockspring assembly in place.
  • 2) Depress these clips one by one, and gently release the clockspring assembly from the stalk assembly.
  • 3) Continue the above process for the both the AU and the EF/EL Clocksprring assemblies.

Step 4 - Swapping Stalk Electrical Connectors


  • Swapping the Electrical Connectors from the AU and EF Stalk Switches
    Note, this step is only required if you have cruise control, and wish to fit the AU Cruise control On/Off Stalk Switch.
    This step is provided if the AU stalk switch is missing the variable intermittant wiper and or Ignition key illumination options.
    Please also note, if the same functions are available on the AU stalk switch, or these functions are not required,
    then you can safely skip this step.

    Removing the EF/EL Wiring loom from the stalk assembly
  • 1) Locate and cut the zip tie(s) holding the main wiring loom in place.
  • 2) You will need to remove the 2 main electrical connectors that are plugged on to the stalk switch assembly shown in figure 4.
  • 3) to unplug these connectors, use a flat bladed screwdriver, and gently pry the connector tab apart, freeing the electrical connector.

    Removing the AU wiring from the stalk assembly.
  • 1) Locate and cut the zip tie(s) holding the main wiring loom in place.
  • 2) You will need to remove the 2 main electrical connectors that are plugged on to the stalk switch assembly shown in figure 4.
  • 3) to unplug these connectors, use a flat bladed screwdriver, and gently pry the connector tab apart, freeing the electrical connector.

Variable Intermittant Wiper Function


  • If the wiper stalk on the EF/EL includes the variable intermittant wiper delay ring switch,
    you will need to remove the wiper stalk switch from your EF/EL stalk assembly

    To do this,
  • 1) Locate the two small phillips head screws holding the wiper stalk switch plastic mounting bracket in place.
  • 2) carefully unscrew these two screws, and gently remove the bracket.
  • 3) pull the wiper stalk switch outward from the stalk assembly.
  • 4) free the wiper stalk switch wiring from the stalk assembly.

    Next, you will need to remove the bad wiper stalk switch from the AU assembly.
  • 5) Locate the two small phillips head screws holding the wiper stalk switch plastic mounting bracket in place.
  • 6) carefully unscrew these two screws, and gently remove the bracket.
  • 7) pull the wiper stalk switch outward from the stalk assembly.
  • 8) free the wiper stalk switch wiring from the stalk assembly.

    Finally, you will need to fit the EF/EL Wiper stalk switch to the AU stalk assembly
  • 9) Fit the wiper stalk switch into the stalk assembly by aligning the stalk pivot knob into the stalk assembly.
  • 10) Depress the stalk switch detent button, and align the stalk pivot knob with the stalk mounting bracket pivot hole.
  • 11) Align the stalk mounting bracket screw holes with the stalk assembly
  • 12) Tighten the two phillips head screws holding the stalk mounting bracket in place.

Step 5 - Fitting AU clockspring to the Stalk assembly.


  • The next step involves fitting the AU clocksrping (The one with the yellow Airbag connector), to the stalk assembly you are going to use.
  • 1) Align the three clips on the clockspring assembly with the mounting tabs on the stalk assembly.
  • 2) Clip the clockspring in to place.

Step 6 - Modifying AU Cruise ON/ OFF stalk switch


  • If you have cruise control, you will need to modify the AU Cruise control stalk switch wiring in order for the stalk switch to work with an EF/EL
  • 1) Located the 3 wires coming out from behind the AU cruise control stalk switch.
    These wires will be coloured Red, Yellow, and Green
  • 2) Cut these wires as far away from the stalk switch as possible.
  • 3) Locate the Black wire coming out from behind the clockspring.
  • 4) See the image below for more details
  • 5) Connect the Yellow wire from the AU cruise control stalk switch to the Black wire coming out from the Clock spring.
  • 6) Connect the Red wire from the AU cruise control stalk switch to the Blue wire coming out from the Clock spring.
  • 7) Connect the Green wire from the AU cruise control stalk switch to the Purple wire coming out from the Clock spring.
  • 8) Solder the connections, and tape up.

Step 7 - Fitting the clockspring / stalk assembly


  • NOTE: Do not connect the electrical connectors yet !
  • 1) Fit the clockspring / stalk assembly to the steering wheel column.
  • 2) Fit the 3 screws holding the clockspring / Stalk aseembly using a phillips head screwdriver.
  • 3) Next connect the Negative Steering wheel control wire from your audio system, to the Black wire, on the 4 pin connector from the AU clockspring.
  • 4) Next connect the Positive Steering wheel control wire from your audio system, to the Red wire, on the 4 pin connector from the AU clockspring.
  • 5) Solder and tape the connections.

Step 8 - Connecting and testing Stalk Electricals


  • 1) Connect the electrical connectors that were previously connected.
  • 2) Turn the Ignition siwth to the On Position.
  • 3) Ensure the Turn SIgnals, High Beam, Flash, Wiper, Washer and Hazard light switch functions correctly.
  • 4) If fitted, ensure that The Cruise Control can be turned On and Off using the AU Cruise Control stalk switch.
    If there is a problem with any of these, then you will need to unplug the electrical connectors, remove the assembly, and check the connectors.

Step 9 - Testing the Steering Wheel Audio functions


  • 1) Connect the AU Steering wheel audio buttons, electrical connector, to the clockspring connector.
  • 2) Turn the Ignition Switch on the Accessories Position.
  • 3) Go to the Steering Wheel Audio Control Configuration Menu for your audio system.
  • 4) Select the Learn button function.
  • 5) Press a button on the Steering wheel audio controls.
    You Audio system should recognise that a button was pressed. If this is not the case, check the polarity of the Steering Wheel Control wires.
  • 6) Continue testing using all 3 buttons on the steering wheel audio controls.
  • 7) If the Audio system detects all three butons as working, you can continue on to the next step.

Step 10 - Fitting the steering wheel column shrouds


  • 1) Align the upper steering column plastic shroud with the metal mounting bracket on the steering wheel column.
  • 2) Fit the 3 phillips head screws to affix the upper plastic steering column shroud to the steering column
  • 3) Fit the Ignition key illumination bulb to the lower steering column plastic shroud (where fitted)
  • 4) Slide the lower plastic shroud over the ignition switch barrel.
  • 5) Click the lower steering column shroud into the upper steering column plastic shroud.
  • 6) Fit the 2 Phillips head screws to affix the plastic lower steering column shroud to the upper steering column shroud.

Step 11 - Modifying the AU Steering Wheel Connector.


  • NOTE: This step is only required if you have obtained only the Audio Buttons from an AU.
    If you are missing the Cruise Control buttons from an AU, then you will need to add an extra wire to the steering wheel audio button connector that connects to the clockspring.
    Becuase you will no longer need the Old EF Steering wheel button connector, it is suggested that you butcher this connector to obtain the required pin and wire.
  • 1) Using any tools neccessary, cut the plastic from the old EF 3 Pin Cruise control button connector, and release a wire, complete with pin.
  • 2) Insert this wire into the spare hole in the AU steering wheel audio buttons 4 Pin connector.

Step 12 - Modifying the Cruise / Horn Connectors.


  • If you have cruise control fitted, you will no longer need the steering wheel Cruise control On/Off Switch assembly.

    To remove the assembly,
  • 1) Remove the 2 phillips head screws holding the switch assembly in place. (Keep these screws safe for later use)
  • 2) Cut the 3 wires for the On/Off switch, and remove the switch from the steering wheel.
  • 3) Next, locate the 2 Black wires from the Horn buttons that are connected to the 3 Pin Connector.
  • 4) Cut these 2 black wires at the connector. (We will need to connect the Horn Switches to the red connector that came with the AU audio buttons).
  • 5) Next, cut the Red connector from the AU audio buttons off, and connect the black wires from the horn buttons to these wires.
  • 6) Cut the 3 WIres coming from the EF/EL Cruise Control Button, near the 3 Pin Connector.
  • 7) Connect the 2 Black wires from the EF/EL Cruise Control Buttons to the Black wire going to the Horns.
  • 8) Connect the spare wire from the 4 Pin AU Steering Wheel button connector to the Blue wire with a black stripe coming from the EF/EL Cruise control buttons.
  • 9) Solder the connections, and tape up.

Step 13 - Mounting the Buttons on the Steering wheel


  • 1) Locate and remove the 4 screws holding the plastic backing from the steering wheel.
  • 2) Roughly position the Audio and Cruise control buttons on the plastic backing.
  • 3) Clip the wiring in to place.
  • 4) Screw the steering wheel on to the plastic backing.
  • 5) Mount the Audio control buttons on to the sterring wheel by fitting the 2 phillips head screws.
  • 6) Mount the EF/EL Cruise Control Buttons to the steering wheel by fitting the 2 phillips head screws.
  • 7) Mount the Steering wheel on the the steering column.
  • 8) Fit the T45 Torx Bolt and tighten.

Step 14 - Modifying the Airbag connector.


  • The Airbag connector on AU models is different to the EF/EL Connector.
  • 1) Cut the yellow AU Airbag connector roughly in the middle of the wire.
  • 2) Cut the old EF/EL Airbag connector from the OLd EF Clockspring about halfway.
  • 3) Strip both wires coming from the AU Clockspring for the Airbag, taking special care not to pull the wires out from the clockspring.
  • 4) Strip the wires for the EF/EL Airbag connector.
  • 5) Matching the wire colours, connect and solder the AU Clockspring Airbag wires to the EF/EL Airbag connector.
  • 6) Connect the Airbag to the EF/EL Airbag connector.
  • 7) Fit the Airbag to the steering wheel.
  • 8) Fit the 2 10mm Bolts fixing the airbag to the steering wheel.
  • 9) Fit the 2 steering wheel plugs covering the 21 10mm bolts.
  • 10) Turn the ignition to the On Position.
  • 11) Ensure the Airbag Fault light does not remain illuminated.
