Upgrading Instrument Clusters for the Holden VE II Commodore

  • This Document Describes the differences between various models of Instrument Clusters fitted to the VE Series Holden Commodore.
    It also has information on upgrading an Instrument Cluster, modifications that need to be made, wiring information, and some points to watch out for when performing these upgrades.

    There were seven models of Instrument Clusters that were fitted to the VE Series Commodore.
    The Following Images of Clusters have been taken from various VE Commodore Models, and include,
  • Type A Instrument Clusters as fitted to the Omega Models

  • Type B Instrument Clusters as fitted to the Berlina

  • Type C Instrument Clusters as fitted to the SV6 and SS Models

  • Type D Instrument Clusters as fitted to the SS V Models

  • Type D Instrument Clusters as fitted to Pontiac G8 Models

  • Type B and C Instrument Clusters as fitted to Calais and Calais V Models

  • Type E Instrument Clusters as fitted to the Statesman Caprice Models

  • Type F Instrument Clusters as fitted to the HSV Short Wheelbase Models

  • Type F Instrument Clusters as fitted to the Vauxhall VXR8 Models

  • IMPORTANT NOTE:
    There are two variations of VE Instrument cluster, that appear to be incompatible with each other.
    VE Year Models MY06, MY07, MY08, and MY08.5 do not support instrument clusters from MY09 Models and Later.
    Likewise it appears the MY09 Models do not support earlier MY06, MY07, MY08 and MY08.5 Instrument Clusters.
    The limitation appears to be a GM TECH2 programming limitation, and as such it is not recommended that late model clusters are fitted to earlier models, and vice versa.

    HOW TO IDENTIFY EARLY AND LATE MODEL INSTRUMENT CLUSTERS VE Instrument clusters from Year Models MY06, MY07, MY08 and MY08.5 have a white plastic cover on the back on the instrument cluster.
    These instrument clusters are manufactured by Arrow Australia, and are only suitable for early model VE commodores. The Dial illumination for earlier models is the same colour as the center LCD screen.

    VE Instrument Clusters from MY09, MY10, and Series II Commodores have a black plastic cover on the back of the instrument cluster.
    The dial illumination for these models is white, whilst the center LCD screen retains the original illumination colour.
  • The cluster shown above is from a Pre MY09 Model VE Omega
    This cluster version is known internally by holden as the Type A Instrument cluster, and was fitted to the following models

  • Engineering mode allows you to view diagnostic information such as the clusters part number, software version, vehicle voltage, switch positions, raw guage readings, and other interesting tidbits about the vehicle.

    To enter the VE Commodore Cluster Engineering Mode
    1. Press and hold the Scroll Wheel button on the steering wheel.
    2. Switch ignition to the ON position.
    3. Release the scroll wheel button button on the steering wheel.
    4. The Drivers Information Center LCD Display will read "Engineering Mode", and will display a number of menu options.
    5. Highlight the required menu option by using the scroll wheel, and scrolling up or down until the desired menu option is highlighted.
    6. Press the Scroll wheel button to select the highlighted menu option.

    The following menu options are available in engineering mode,
    1 Software Version - This option will display the software or firmware version uploaded in to the instrument cluster
    2 Holden Part Number - This option will display the Holden Part number for the instrument cluster installed in the vehicle
    3 Battery Voltage - This option will display the current vehicle battery voltage, in volts
    4 Fuel Remaining in Tank - This option will display the remaining fuel in the fuel tank in Litres
    5 Instantaneous Fuel - This option will display the live fuel consumption in Litres
    6 Engine Coolant Temperature - This option will display the live coolant temperature as read from the collant sensor, in degrees ?C
    7 Vehicle Speed - This option will display the vehicle speed digitally, in Kms/hr
    8 Engine RPM - This option will display the Engine RPM digitally
    9 Tyre Pressure - If the tyre pressure option is fitted (HSV Series 1 and export models), this option will display the four individual tyre pressures
    10 Engine Oil Life - This option will display the percentage of estimated oil life left, before an oil change will be required.
    11 Park Lamp State - This option show the park lamps state, I.E. if the park lamps are currently ON or OFF
    12 Steering wheel Switch Voltage - This option will display the returned voltage from the steering wheel switches, and will vary when a switch is depressed
    13 Gear Lever Position - This option will display the currently selected gear position (Automatic models only)
    14 Throttle Position Requested - This option will display the current throttle postion, as a percentage. 0% is closed, 100% is wide open throttle.
    15 Transmission Oil Temp - This option will display the transmission oil temperature in Degrees Celsuis
    16 Cluster Self Test - This option will illuminate all cluster warnings lamps, and will position all cluster needles to their half way positions.

  • To remove the existing instrument cluster from the vehicle.
    Unscrew the two Philips head screws securing the OBD-II connector, located beneath the steering column, on the lower black trim.
    Pull the lower black trim downwards from the top of the trim, and disengage the three clips holing the top most part of the trim in place.

    Un-clip the foot well illumination bulb holder from the trim, by turning the bulb holder anti clock wise.
    (Use caution as the foot well illumination bulb may be HOT !!!!)
    Swing the lower black trim downwards, and disengage the back 3 clips to remove the trim from the vehicle.

    Pulling from the top of the drivers side instrument panel trim that holds the headlamp switch assembly, carefully disengage the 2 clips on the outer side, and the two clips on the inner side of the trim, allowing the trim to be swung downwards slightly, and allowing access to the headlamp switch assembly.
    Disengage he headlamp switch assembly electrical connector by depressing the plastic tab on the connector (located on the RHS of the plug), and pulling the plug away from the headlamp switch.
    Pulling from the bottom of the drivers side colored instrument panel trim, disengage the remaining 4 clips holding the back part of the trim in place.
    Do not attempt to remove the trim yet !
    Next, carefully attempt to maneuverer the trim plastic located nearest to the gear shift selector, downwards, trying not to scratch the steering column trim plastic.
    Take you time with this step, as the colored trim panel does flex enough to allow you to do this, but it is fragile, and could easily break if you use too much force.

    Once you have the Inner most plastic colored trim below the steering column plastic trim, attempt to maneuverer the outer side of the trim around, and below the steering column plastic trim, again being carefully as to not scratch or damage the trim.
    With the colored plastic trim removed, you will need to remove the plastic / aluminum trim strip below the instrument cluster.
    To do this, gently pull the trim strip outwards, using an even amount of force, starting from the outside end of the trim piece, and moving inwards, disengaging each clip that holds the trim in place.
    Once the plastic / aluminum trim has been removed you should now be able to see the screws used to hold the instrument cluster surround trim in place.
    Remove the two Phillips screws holding the lower part of the instrument cluster surround trim.
    Next, remove the three upper Phillips head screws holding the instrument cluster surround trim in place.
    Once all the screws have been removed from the trim, slowly maneuver the trim outwards, being careful not to scratch the instrument cluster lens, and not to tear the steering column trim.
    Once you have a bit of room to get behind the instrument cluster trim surround, disengage the two clips holding the instrument cluster trim surround, from the upper steering column trim.
    The following images best describes the location of the two clips used to secure the instrument cluster surround to the upper steering column trim.
    Please note, the clip locations have been highlighted in red.
    Finally, once the instrument cluster surround trim has been removed, you can begin removing the four Phillips head screws used to secure the instrument cluster.
    Now that the four phillips head screws have been removed, slowly and carefully maneuver the instrument cluster outwards from the instrument panel, so as you can access the electrical connector located at the back / top of the instrument cluster.
    Swing the instrument cluster electrical connector clip clockwise to disengage the electrical connector from the instrument cluster.

    Finally, remove the instrument cluster from the vehicle.
  • When swapping instrument clusters, you will need to have the original odometer reading, as well as other importan vehicle parameters programmed in to the replacement cluster.
    in order for the new cluster / vehicle to function
    These settings include,
    Odometer Reading
    The Odometer reading can only be set if the cluster to be programmed has a reading of less than 100Kms.

    Doors
    2 Door - Utility
    4 Door - Short Wheel Base Sedan
    4 Door - Long Wheel Base Sedan
    5 Door Sportswagon

    Tyre Pressure Monitoring Fitted
    Displays current tyre pressure information for the front and rear tyres.
    If enabled without the TPMS fitted, the cluster will display 0psi/kpa.

    Police Mode
    When Police Mode is enabled, pressing the Left Hand Steering wheel Scroll button will store the vehicles current speed.
    Scrolling Down will return to the current vehicle speed, and scrolling up will display the stored vehicle speed.

    Navigation
    When enabled, the cluster will display the Navigation screen when the [TRIP] button is pressed.

    Fleet Telematics
    When enabled the cluster will prompt the driver if the trip is for Business or Personal use.
    (It is unknown what else is available with this feature at this time.

    LPG Fitted
    Enabled when Factory LPG is fitted to the vehicle.

    Automatic Self Levelling Headlamps Fitted
    Unknown - When enabled with a vehicle not fitted with self levelling headlamps (Caprice / CapriceV / Grange models)
    The cluster will display fault information regarding the Headlamp Self Levelling system.

    HSV Magnetic Ride Control Fitted
    When enabled, this feature will display MRC setting information on the cluster screen.
    If MRC is not fitted, the cluster will display an MRC fault.

    Track or Normal Shift Display
    When the track shift display is enabled, selecting Sport or Manual mode for automatic transmissions will constantly display the currently selected gear
    at the bottom of the main LCD display.
    This is the default setting for HSV clusters.

    Seatbelt Warning Beeps Disabled
    When this feature is enabled, the seatbelt warning beeps or disabled when the vehicle is started without the drivers seatbelt fastened.

  • Obviously, when swapping Instrument clusters, you will want to keep the same Odometer Readings for your vehicle.
    Because the VE series vehicles have a digital Odometer, simply cracking open, and winding the Odometer backwards will not work.
    So how is the Odometer reading changed ?
    Firstly, you will need to know a little bit about electronics.
    The Odometer Reading, as well as the Trip meter, Service due setting, and many other factory settings, are stored in a device known in the Electronics industry as an EEPROM, or E2PROM, (pronounced E squared Prom).
    An E2PROM is an Electrically Erasable, Electrically Programable, Read Only Memory, very similar to the Flash upgradeable Computer Bios.
    Anyway, without boring you on how an E2PROM works, the model used in the VE Instrument Clusters is an 95160 Surface Mount model.
    This chip is located approximately 3cm above the chunkiest chip, on the back of the Instrument Cluster Circuit Board.
    This is the same position for all VE Instrument Clusters.
    To Swap the Instrument cluster Odo reading, as well as the factory configuration, all you need to do is swap the EEPROMs from your original instrument cluster,
    to the new instrument cluster that you wish to fit.
    Please Note: There are some problems when using this method,
    1) If you are swapping from a single LCD window, to a triple LCD window instrument cluster, the trip computer functions on the two smaller LCD windows may not function.
    2) If you are swapping from a triple LCD window, to a single LCD window instrument cluster, you will lose most of your trip computer functions such as Distance to Empty, and Instant Fuel Used.
    3) If you are swapping from an instrument cluster with a lower or higher maximum speed reading on the face, then any speedo readings above 120Km/Hr will be incorrect.
    This problem occures due to Holden using a compressed speedo reading above 120Km/Hr on the guage face. The value of the compression used is stored in the EEPROM chip.

  • The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) contains a driver information center (DIC) which provides visual information to the driver for a number of vehicle functions such as trip computer, audio functions, warnings and reminders.

    When the ignition is switched to the ON position, a vehicle system check is performed and the status is shown on the Driver Information Center.

    A number of IPC features will be tested in order to verify the features are working correctly. The following occurs at key ON.
  • The supplementary restraint system warning lamp illuminates briefly (not IPC controlled).
  • The anti-lock brake system (ABS) warning lamp illuminates briefly.
  • The charging system warning lamp illuminates briefly.
  • The brake warning lamp illuminates briefly.
  • The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) illuminates until the engine is running (not IPC controlled).
  • The seat belt warning lamp will stay illuminated until the driver seat belt is latched (not IPC controlled).

    If there are no warnings or service reminders the DIC shows a series of welcome screens.
    If the system check detects a problem, the DIC displays the appropriate warning immediately.
    If a warning is displayed, press the TRIP button to acknowledge it (once for each warning).
    The DIC then reverts to the original trip computer display.
  • Pressing the TRIP button any time during the system check causes the DIC to jump ahead to the last trip computer screen displayed before the ignition was last switched off. The system check continues to run in the background
  • To display the odometer screen, if not already displayed on the DIC, press the TRIP button until the screen appears

    When the ignition is in the OFF position, the odometer appears on the DIC, unless a service reminder is active.
    Active service reminders will be displayed on the DIC for 10 seconds before reverting back to the odometer for a short period of time and then turning off completely.
    The odometer will be displayed on the DIC again when the drivers door is opened.
