Upgrading to a Series II IQ Unit for the Chevrolet VE SS

  • With the Release of the VE Series II Commodore, Holden has completely released a completely redesigned Infotainment System called Holden IQ.

The Holden IQ infotainment system brings with it many enhancements over the original VE Series I infotainment system including the following,
    1) Touch Screen functionality for all models
    2) Dual Zone Climate Control functionality for Omega, SV6 and SS models.
    3) Colour LCD Screen for Omega, SV6, SS and Berlina models.
    4) An integrated Sat-Nav system for SSV CalaisV and CapriceV models (optional on other models)
(This is opposed to the additional glove box factory Sat-Nav unit for Series I SSV, Calais, Statesman and Caprice models)
    5) Traffic Management and routing for Sat-Nav models.
    6) MP3 and WMA file compatibility via USB and CD
    7) CD local ripping and storage (For all models except Omega)
    8) Bluetooth music streaming and phone support
    9) Phone contact synchronisation and outbound call support
    10) Inbound Call number display on the cluster and IQ unit
    11) Call Sat Nav Points of Interest directly from the Sat-Nav unit using a paired bluetooth phone.
  • IQ System Main Unit

There are three different IQ system main units that were fitted to Series II Commodore models.
    These include,
    1) Level 1 main Unit (No CD Ripping, No Sat-Nav support, single amplifier chip).
    2) Level 2 main Unit (CD Ripping, Sat-Nav upgradable, dual amplifier chips).
    3) Level 3 main Unit (CD Ripping, Sat-Nav Daughter board fitted, dual amplifier chips)

    Level 1 IQ Main Unit
The Level 1 IQ main unit was fitted to Holden Omega models, and Chevrolet PPV models.
It features the same physical boards as the Level 2 IQ main units, with the exception of the following,
    a. It is missing one main amplifier chip (Giving it half the power output of the Level 2 units)
    b. It is missing the required flash chips to store ripped CDs.
    c. It is missing the second diversity antenna (Brown) connector on the side of the unit.
    d. It is missing the Sat-Nav daughter board connector (Hence these units cannot be retro fitted with the Sat-Nav daughter board)

    Level 2 IQ Main Unit
The Level 2 IQ main unit was fitted to SV6, SS, Berlina and Calais models (except where Sat-Nav was optioned).
These units have the same specifications as the Level 3 IQ units, with the exception of the missing Sat-Nav daughter board.
This means that these units can be upgraded to support Sat-Nav, however this requires the following,
    a. Obtaining a Sat-Nav daughter board (which is impossible as it is only supplied with a Level 3 IQ main unit),
    b. Programming the IQ unit to enable the Sat-Nav function via specialised programming
A level 2 IQ unit can be identified by counting the number of antenna connectors available on the side of the unit.
(It should have 2 Antenna Connectors, one for the roof mount antenna, and a second for the diversity antenna).

    Level 3 IQ Main Unit
The Level 3 IQ main unit was fitted to SSV, CalaisV, CapriceV and HSV models (and was fitted to other models when the Sat-Nav option was specified)
These units have the same specifications as the Level 2 IQ units, with the exception of the fitment of a Sat-Nav daughter board.
These units can be identified by the number of antenna connectors located on the side of the main unit.
A Level 3 IQ unit should have 4 Antenna connectors,
One standard roof mounted antenna connector,
A second diversity (rear window mounted) antenna connector,
A Sat Nav GPS Position antenna connector,
And a Traffic Management antenna connector (for the TMC antenna splitter).

    IQ Unit Facia

The IQ fascia is the second part of the complete IQ unit.
The fascia plugs in to the IQ main unit, and is the interface between the main unit, and the people using the system.
It includes the touch screen, as well as the Audio and HVAC controls.

There are three different fascia models available for the IQ unit,
    These include
    1) Grey Style (Fitted to Omega, Berlina, Calais and CalaisV models)
    2) Piano Black Style (Fitted to SV6, SS, SSV and HSV models)
    3) Long Wheelbase Grey Style (Fitted to Statesman, Caprice, CapriceV and Grange models)

These fascias are interchangeable between different IQ main units, however the surround trim pieces cannot be interchanged between faces.
I.E. It is only possible to fit the round vent upper surround to piano black fascias, and the square vent upper surround to grey style fascias.
Likewise if you are looking to fit the E3 HSV triple gauges, you will require a piano black fascia in order to fit the HSV upper surround.

  • When fitting an IQ unit to a Series I or Series II Commodore, you will need to have the VIN number of your vehicle programmed in to the IQ unit.
Without completing this step, the IQ unit will display a VIN lockout message, and will not function.

It is HIGHLY recommended that you also enable functions such as reverse camera and the RSE / DVR input,
as well as disable the factory Video In Motion lockout, Sat Nav and Bluetooth lockout functions at the same time.

This will require specialised programming which is available as a mail in, mail out service by Ultimate Wiring Conversions in Sydney, Australia.
  • To fit and wire the IQ system to a series I, we will need to remove the glove compartment from the vehicle.

Firstly, you will need to remove the passenger side lower foot well trim to gain access to the bottom of the glove box.
To remove this trim piece, simply pull the trim piece downwards, starting from the back of the trim piece, disengaging the 3 clips holding the back of the trim pieces in place, and a further 3 clips used to hold the front of the trim piece in place.

The following image shows the passenger side lower trim partially removed.
Lower Passenger footwell trim   lower passenger footwell trim

Next, you will need to remove the horizontal dash spear trim on the passenger side of the vehicle.
It is best to start from one end of the spear trim, pulling the trim outwards with an even amount of force.
The horizontal trim pieces are held in place using a number of clips, which can be disengaged by pulling the trim piece outwards, away from the dash, as shown in the following image.
Removing dash spears   removing dash spear trim

Removal of the passenger side spear trim will allow you to access the upper glove box screws, which will require removal a little later.

Next remove the fascia surrounding the boot release switch, inside the glove compartment.
Once the fascia is removed, you will need to remove the screw located beneath the fascia.
Next, locate the second screw cover on the other side of the glove compartment.
Glove box hidden screw locations   Glove box hidden screw locations

Remove this cover, and remove the screw located underneath this cover.
Next, locate and remove the 2 screws located at the bottom of the glove compartment, used to hod the bottom of the assembly in place.
These screws would have been hidden underneath the lower passenger foot well trim.

Once you have these screws removed, you will need to remove the 4 upper glove compartment screws.
The following image shows the location of these screws.

Finally, with all the glove compartment mounting screws removed, the glove compartment assembly can be removed from the vehicle.
  • Next, you will need to remove the drivers side lower trim to access the side of the radio, as well as remove the Series I radio frame.
Unscrew the two Philips head screws securing the OBD-II connector, located beneath the steering column, on the lower black trim.
Pull the lower black trim downwards from the top of the trim, and disengage the three clips holing the top most part of the trim in place.

Un-clip the foot well illumination bulb holder from the trim, by turning the bulb holder anti clock wise.
(Use caution as the foot well illumination bulb may be HOT !!!!)
Swing the lower black trim downwards, and disengage the back 3 clips to remove the trim from the vehicle.

Pulling from the top of the drivers side instrument panel trim that holds the headlamp switch assembly, carefully disengage the 2 clips on the outer side, and the two clips on the inner side of the trim, allowing the trim to be swung downwards slightly, and allowing access to the headlamp switch assembly.
Disengage he headlamp switch assembly electrical connector by depressing the plastic tab on the connector (located on the RHS of the plug), and pulling the plug away from the headlamp switch.
Pulling from the bottom of the drivers side colored instrument panel trim, disengage the remaining 4 clips holding the back part of the trim in place.
Do not attempt to remove the trim yet !
Next, carefully attempt to maneuverer the trim plastic located nearest to the gear shift selector, downwards, trying not to scratch the steering column trim plastic.
Take you time with this step, as the colored trim panel does flex enough to allow you to do this, but it is fragile, and could easily break if you use too much force.

Once you have the Inner most plastic colored trim below the steering column plastic trim, attempt to maneuverer the outer side of the trim around, and below the steering column plastic trim, again being carefully as to not scratch or damage the trim.
With the colored plastic trim removed, you will need to remove the plastic / aluminum trim strip below the instrument cluster.
To do this, gently pull the trim strip outwards, using an even amount of force, starting from the outside end of the trim piece, and moving inwards, disengaging each clip that holds the trim in place.
  • To remove the centre ventilation pod assembly from the vehicle, you mist first remove the centre dash speaker grill.
To do this, pull the grill upwards, towards the windscreen, starting from the back of the grill.
There are four clips used to hold the grill in place, an disengaging these clips requires some force, although it is not impossible to do.
With the centre speaker grill removed, locate and remove the two mounting screws located at the front of the centre ventilation assembly used to hold the assembly in place.
Finally, remove the centre ventilation assembly by pulling the back of the assembly upwards towards the windscreen, disengaging the rear two clips holding the assembly in place.
Next pull the assembly away from the dash, to disengage the two front clips use to hold the assembly in place.
Finally, remove the assembly from the vehicle.

Next, you will need to replace the dash centre ventilation ducting.
To do this, simply remove the single screw, located in the picture below.
Next, remove the Series I Dash Centre Ducting from the vehicle by pulling the duct outwards, away from the dash.
  • In order to remove the lower radio surround trim, you will need to move the centre console trim back an inch or so, to allow the existing trim to be removed, as well as fit the new Series II lower radio surround chassis and trim.

The following provides information on how to remove the center console completely from the vehicle.
Depending on your situation, this may not be required, however the information has been added here just in case.

    1) Gently pry the automatic gear shift surround upwards away from the center console plastic trim.
    2) Remove the automatic gear shift surround, as shown in the following figure below.
    3) Gently prise the center console plastic trim upwards, starting from the rear of the trim, disengaging the 4 clips used to hold the trim in place.
    4) Unplug the two Power window / mirror switch module wiring connectors, as well as the traction control, Park Assist and Transmission Sport Mode button (Where fitted).
    5) Remove lower radio console bin / smokers pack by locating and removing the 2 phillips head screws holding the lower console bin / smokers pack in place.
(These screws will be located at the base of the console bin / smokers pack assembly, and would normally be covered by the transmission trim).
With the screws removed, gently pull the console bin / smokers pack upwards and outwards away from the center console.
    6) Remove the silver / black trim piece located just behind the cup holder assembly.
Below this trim piece are two phillips head screws used to fasten th cup holder assembly in place.
Once the trim piece is removed, remove the two screws holding the top of the cup holder assembly to the center console.
    7) Next remove the cup holder mat from the bottom of the cupholder assembly.
This will reveal one final screw which is used to secure the cup holder to the center console.
Finally remove this screw, and pull the cupholder assembly upward, disengaging the clip used to hold the cupholder in place.

    8) Next remove the passenger grab handle from the center console.
The passenger grab handle splits in to two pieces, an upper and lower piece.
To remove the upper piece, locate the two screws holding this trim piece in place.
Remove these screws, and gently pull the upper grab handle trim piece upwards.
(The trim pice clips in to the lower grab handle trim piece, so it may require a bit of fiddling to remove.
Next remove the lower passenger grab handle assembly by locating the two phillips head screws
on the side of the center console, as shown below.

    9) Next remove the Lower handbrake cup trim piece, by locating and removing the mounting screw,
and unclipping the trim piece from the center console.
    10) Next we will need to remove the rear airvent assembly (Non Ute models) to gain access to the screws used
to hold the center console assembly in place.
Firstly, unclip the trim piece below the rear seat airvents to expose the 5 screws underneath,
    and remove these 5 screws.
Next Unclip the upper trim piece for the rear seat airvents to expose a further 4 screws.
Remove these 4 screws which will allow you to remove the lower bin and vent surround plastic.

    11) Next we will need to remove a further 2 screws used to hold the back of the center console assembly in place.
These screws are located in the following position.
    12) Locate a further phillips head screw located in the main center console bin, by removing the center console carpet trim.
    12) And finally locate the two screws holding the front of the center console,
located underneath the passenger grab handle, and lower handbrake trim piece.

    13) You will next need to disengage the center console from the lower radio trim piece.
To do this, carefully pry the center console assembly away from the lower radio trim using a flat headed screwdriver.
located underneath the passenger grab handle, and lower handbrake trim piece are 2 further screws used to secure the center console assembly.
Once these screws have been removed, you should now be able to lift the center console assembly upwards, revealing the console bin lamp and rear seat smokers pack wiring harness.
You should now be able to remove the lower radio surround, leaving you with something very similar to the following.

  • The following chart provides information on how to re-wire a series I VE Commodore, so as to accept a Series II IQ System.
It is highly recommended that this guide be printed out, and followed carefully, as it is fairly easy to make mistakes.

It is also highly recommended that a ISO T Harness connector is sourced, and modified instead of modifying the vehicles wiring directly.
This will allow you to take your time and re-pin / re-wire the ISO T Harness Connector outside of the vehicle, also allowing you to continue using your existing head unit, until you are ready to fit your new IQ unit.

The following chart contains the following Wiring information

    NOTE 1
Unlike Series I Head units that have the auxiliary Input jack on the head unit fascia,
Series II Models have an Front auxiliary Input Jack located in the centre console area.

This jack is a standard stereo 3.5mm jack with insertion sensing, which can be sourced from places like Jaycar and Element 14.

The insertion sensing line should be shorted to ground in order for the IQ unit to automatically switch to the Front Auxiliary input whenever a 3.5mm stereo cable is inserted in to the jack.

    NOTE 2
The Series II IQ unit does not require the separate blue tooth module (located above the glove box).
This module can be safely unplugged and removed from the vehicle.
The blue-tooth microphone located in the courtesy lamp housing will need to be physically connected directly to the IQ Microphone Input.

    NOTE 3
The Telephone Audio signals should not be confused with the Blue-tooth microphone input.
The Telephone Audio signals allow for connecting a Cellular Car Phone Type Cradle to the IQ unit, allowing the hands free kit to mute the audio from the IQ unit, as well as push audio through the IQ units speakers.

With very few mobile phones supporting hands free car cradles, this feature is somewhat redundant.
