Vehicles need to be registered every 12 months.

You should be sent a renewal notice approximately 6 weeks prior to the expiration date notifying you that you need to organise your vehicle for a Green Slip and if required a Pink Slip. You will need to organise, have your vehicle pass and then pay for your Pink Slip (if your registration papers state that your vehicle requires an inspection) – as well as organise and pay for your Compulsory Third Party insurance (CTP) . You will need to do this before you present all of you paperwork and pay your renewal fees at your local Motor Authority.

If you have purchased a New Vehicle from a Dealership you may not require a Pink Slip inspection within the first 3 years of owning the vehicle.

Once your vehicle has passed all its required paperwork you will be issued with a registration number on the coloured sticker of your registration paperwork. This label should be inserted on your vehicles internal windows – either on the front lower-left portion of the windscreen or on a side window on the vehicles left-hand side. Any old labels must be removed immediately – it is against the law to leave them on display.

What is A Green Slip / CTP?

Green Slip or Compulsory Third Party insurance protects vehicle owners and drivers who are legally liable for personal injury to any other party in the event of a personal injury claim made against you by other road users. It is compulsory in most States and Territories for every vehicle using public roads to have a green slip. This must be done every year when the vehicle is registered. It is up to the consumer to find a CTP provider that suits them so shop around and make sure you contact more than one CTP provider.

Your CTP insurance covers you, your passengers, and other road users such as drivers, passengers, pedestrians and cyclists. It does not cover damage to property and other vehicles in the event of an accident – however it does cover human injuries caused from a trailer if you are towing.

What you need to supply to get a Green Slip/CTP?

To get a green slip/ CTP quote, you need to provide the insurer or broker with:

* the make, model and year of manufacture of your vehicle
* where your vehicle is garaged
* whether your vehicle is for private or business use
* your birth date
* whether you are a primary producer or not
* details of accidents or claims in the last 3 years
* whether you have a no claim bonus on your comprehensive insurance
* whether this is your first registration or not
* the birth date of other regular drivers

What is the Lifetime Care and Support Scheme (LTCS)?

The LTCS is a new indicative introduced in NSW on the 1st October 2006. The LTCS provides cover to all children up to age 16 seriously injured in motor accidents regardless of who was at fault.

From October 1 2007 your Green Slip policy will also provide lifetime medical care and support for everyone catastrophically injured in a motor accident regardless of fault.

What is a Pink Slip?

A Pink Slip is a road worthiness or safety inspection report for registered vehicles that is valid for 42 days from the date of issue (for light vehicles). Your registration renewal papers will indicate if you need to have your vehicle inspected by a AIS – Authorised Inspection Station. Your vehicle must pass this test in order for it to be registered. All light vehicles require this unless they are exempt.

What is a Blue Slip?

A Blue Slip is an unregistered vehicle safety inspection report which proves a vehicle has passed the required roadworthiness, design and identity standards. A Blue Slip is also used when interstate vehicles are registered in NSW, and sometimes when second-hand vehicles are selected for additional inspection – this might include interstate and/or imported and modified vehicles.

What is a White Slip?

A White Slip is a rejection report – showing the areas that a vehicle needs repairs in before it is issued with a Pink or Blue Slip. For people selling a vehicle, this rejection form can be used to indicate what needs to be done to make the car roadworthy.
